3D laser scanning, or terrestrial LiDAR, is the reference method to capture the exact geometry of a building, an industrial site or an existing monument. An invisible laser sweeps the space 360° from multiple stations and measures the time of flight of each reflected beam. The result: a dense point cloud, geometrically accurate to the millimeter, exploitable to produce plans, BIM models, ortho-images or measurements.

ARPEO operates a Leica BLK360 G2 scanner, the latest generation of Leica Geosystems' compact scanner. ISO 17123-certified accuracy (±4 mm at 10 m on a single point, ±2 mm averaged). Rate of 680,000 to 2,000,000 points per second depending on resolution. Integrated photogrammetric sensor for HDR colorization of the cloud.

3D laser scanning replaces traditional methods (sketch books, laser distance meters, total stations) on projects where geometry is complex, multiple stakeholders must share a common reference, or the existing must be archived long-term. Once acquired, the point cloud is exploitable indefinitely — for plans, a BIM model, or multi-year defect detection.

— FAQ

3D scan — frequently asked questions.

  • What is the difference between 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry?

3D laser scanning actively measures distance with a laser: geometrically very precise (±2 mm), light-insensitive, but native texture less rich. Photogrammetry reconstructs 3D from photos: high-resolution texture, but lower geometric accuracy (±5 mm) and dependence on natural light. We often combine them: scan for structure, photogrammetry for ornaments and color.

  • What accuracy can I expect from a 3D scan?

Leica BLK360 G2 scanner: ±2 mm at 10 m averaged. Sufficient for: 1/50 ABF-compliant DWG plan, Revit LOD 300 model, millimeter-level structural defect monitoring, BIM integration with cloud-vs-model quality control.

  • How long does on-site acquisition take?

Plan 1 day of acquisition for 500 to 1,200 m² SDP (standard building). Complex industrial sites or fine heritage: up to 5 days. The scanner is silent and invisible (class 1 laser); in-operation work possible.

  • Can you scan an occupied site (operating building)?

Yes. The Leica scanner is silent and has no visible laser. Occupants can stay. Occupied zones are scanned in phases (room by room). For 24/7 industrial sites, off-hour work is possible with OPC/SPS coordination.

  • How many scans (stations) for a project?

    Indicative: 1 station per 30 to 80 m² depending on complexity. A 200 m² R+1 house: ~12 stations. A 1,500 m² R+5 building: ~80 stations. An industrial site: 100 to 500+ stations.

  • Is the laser scanner dangerous?

No. The Leica BLK360 G2 uses a class 1 laser, the safest level (no harm even looking directly at the beam). Same classification as CD/DVD readers. No access restrictions during acquisition.

  • How is the point cloud archived after delivery?

The final cloud is archived at ARPEO for at least 10 years on redundant storage (RAID + off-site backup). The client also receives a full copy (E57 + RCS) via a secure download link. Free reuse of the cloud for future purposes at no additional cost.
